The Anti- Anti-Gun List

In surfing around on the internet, I stumbled on this link which provides a listing of organizations, individuals and celebrities that have officially endorsed an anti-gun stance according to the National Rifle Association - Institute for Legislative Action or NRA-ILA.  In some cases, these organizations have allowed their name to be used in support of specific campaigns that have the purpose of passing anti-gun legislation and, in addition, some have provided financial support.

First, let's pick out a few anti-gun organizations:

American Federation of Teachers
American Association of School Administrators
American Bar Association
American Medical Association
American Nurses Association
B'nai B'rith
International Association of Educators for World Peace
International Ladies' Garment Workers Union
Manhattan Project 2
Mennonite Central Committee
National Association of Chain Drug Stores
NAACP
National Association of School Safety and Law Enforcement Officers
National Association of Elementary School Principals
National Association of Secondary School Principals
United States Catholic Conference
People for the American Way
Unitarian Universalist Association
United Methodist Church
United Church of Christ
YWCA of the U.S.A.

Most of these organizations are familiar to us, however, one that caught my eye was People for the American Way.  While the name rings of right wing politics, PFAW is actually a liberal-leaning organization founded in 1981 by Norman Lear, the creative mind behind “All in the Family”, among others who were disturbed by the "divisive rhetoric of newly politicized televangelists".  They hadn't seen anything yet.  Just wait three decades!

Now, let's look at a sampling of the NRA-ILA's list of anti-gun individuals and celebrities:

Alec Baldwin
Bob Barker
Drew Barrymore
Kevin Bacon
William Baldwin
Benjamin Bratt
Dr. Joyce Brothers
Mel Brooks
James Brooks
Steve Buscemi
Sean Connery
Matt Damon
Ellen Degeneres
Art Garfunkel
Mark Harmon
David E. Kelley
Denis Leary
Madonna
Jack Nicholson
Dennis Quaid
Tim Robbins
Jerry Seinfeld
Bruce Springsteen
Sylvester Stallone
Harvey Weinstein
Sigourney Weaver

It is interesting to look through the entire list; it's pretty much a who's who in Hollywood.  What I find rather surprising is that some of these celebrities have starred in/directed/produced very violent movies including Sylvester Stallone in the very recent "Bullet to the Head" as shown in this trailer:

Count the number of shots showing Stallone holding a firearm.  On top of that, here is a link that will provide you with information regarding his request for a concealed carry weapons permit in 2004.  I guess you don't have to practice what you preach when you are employed in Hollywood!

Lastly, here is a partial list of anti-gun corporations:

A&M Records
American Multi Cinemas Entertainment, Inc.
Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc.
General American - St. Louis
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City Royals
Levi Strauss
Sara Lee Corporation
Southland Corporation (i.e. 7-eleven)
Southwestern Bell Telephone
St. Louis Rams
Time Warner Inc.

Just in case you wondered, American Multi Cinemas is currently showing the previously mentioned "Bullet to the Head".  One has to wonder if General American has its own interests at heart with their anti-gun stance; they are a life insurance company.

While it is intriguing to see which organizations and individuals in America are taking an anti-gun stance, it is even more interesting to see that the NRA keeps track of those who they deem “anti-Second Amendment”.  You are being watched!

  1. An insightful listing of groups and personalities. I do not always agree with many of your conclusions, Junkie, but I appreciate that you pointed out the hypocrisy of people like Stallone and the cinema industry.

I wonder how many of those listed celebrities have their own armed escort? It seems that armed protection should be the provenance of the elite few who can afford professional guards. In any case, the progressive movement catches no flak for listing pro-gun organizations and individuals...I see nothing wrong with a counterbalance of such information on the right.

Good post, Junkie. I enjoy your blog, keep up the good work.

  3. The entire list had hundreds of individuals and organization on it. While I am ready to believe that the Conference of Catholic Bishops has taken a stand against gun violence, Sylvestor Stallone has certainly done no such thing, and I'm guessing that Harry Dean Anderson (McGyver) has not either. This list is the product of a delusional and paranoid mind.

    2. You don't have a clue. This article is garbage. Apparently you haven't been keeping up on the news. Sylvester Stallone is for gun control.

  4. Anti-gun by NRA's definition means in favour of background checks, ban of assault weapons, etc. It probably doesn't mean that you still support owning a concealed weapon (Stallone).

    1. Would you PLEASE define the phrase "assault weapon." WHAT options make an ordinary firearm an assault weapon? Why do you consider these options taboo? Step forward and explain it to us.

    2. I suggest that you read Federals Paper #46 for the REAL reason for the Second Amendment. We already have background checks and the assault weapons ban is SPECIFICALLY to protect the GOV'T not people. Since the AR15 is the most purchased rifle in America right now and they are almost never used in crime why would they need to be banned? To scary looking? I would also point out that Federalist Paper #46 will explain why if we listened to the Founding Fathers every man would own one and a supply of ammo. Its the Brown Bess musket of today. The Brown Bess BTW was the assault weapon of its day. The best, most effective in linear tactics. But Hamilton and others thought everyone should have one or its equivalent. The most agregious instances of mass murder have been inflicted by legal gov'ts on their own citizens. See Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Zedong, gov'ts in Africa and of course Hitler. Almost all of these are socialists or Communists or backed by communists. Then invariably inflict these 100 million plus deaths of an unarmed citizenry. BTW a gun is a gun. If they can ban and AR they can, and eventually will, ban single shot shotguns.

  5. The NRA doesn't like the Kansas City Chiefs? Not even now that they've strengthened their coaching and offense through free agency? Conservatives, geesh. Have one 2-14 season and suddenly you're on 'a list'.

  7. Where is the fine line between reasonable gun control and concealed carry? (Don't forget assault weapons.)Wasn't the second amendment designed so that if the government became too bad, the people could create their own? Where is that fine line? If everybody knew what the problem was, maybe we could solve it. It seems to me like you guys are talking about one thing to the next and not focusing on one topic and making a decision. Get your stuff organized and maybe we can do something about this issue. Why don't politicians get it right and define the task @ hand. Why don't we all figure out what the EXCACT issue is and then we will fix it.
